Purpose

The purpose of this assignment is to explore over-the-counter (OTC) medications for HEENT symptom management. This assignment will allow for discovery into commonly used OTC agents and associated patient education points required for the safe, effective use of these agents. Formulation of a patient-education infographic supports professional formation, communication, and dissemination skills relevant to the FNP.

Preparing the Assignment

Follow these guidelines when completing each component of the assignment. Contact your course faculty if you have questions.

Use Canva.com (Links to an external site.) or another infographic development to design a patient teaching aid about OTC treatments for colds and cough. Use PO drugs only.
Include the following required six sections. You do not have to use these exact words for headings, but they should be labeled to identify the intended topic.
1. What OTC drugs are available for cold and cough?
2. What are their active ingredients?
3. How do I know which one to take?
4. How do I know which OTC medications are safe to take with others?
5. When should I stop taking the OTC medication selected?
6. When should I see my healthcare provider?
Format
1. Readability
2. Lay language for patients rather than professional language
3. Creativity
  1. Use of graphics, images, etc.
4. Use PO drugs only
Reference(s)
1. References must be credited appropriately at the bottom of the infographic in small, readable font to acknowledge the sources of information. References are required; no minimum number of references are expected.
2. References should be from the textbook or a professional source such as the American Gastroenterological Association, Prescriber's Digital Reference, etc.
3. Avoid references from .com sources such as MayoClinic, WebMD, etc.
4. Avoid the use of journal articles for this assignment.

2. Highlight the day and time the infographic was created (see example below).
3. The infographic submitted must match the screenshot submitted with the assignment.
4. The date the infographic is created must coincide with the session in which it is submitted.
