Clinical Question
Catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs) affect any part of the urinary system due to an indwelling catheter. CAUTIs are the most common nosocomial infection (Topal et al., 2019). CAUTIs are linked to longer lengths of hospital stay, morbidity, and death (Gauron & Bigand, 2021). Currently, Medicare and Medicaid services do not reimburse for costs linked to CAUTIs because most of CAUTIs are preventable. Failure to reimburse costs for nosocomial CAUTIs has negative consequences since CAUTIs cost roughly $1,000 per person for each incident, which has a detrimental financial impact on the healthcare organization (Lawrence et al., 2019). Additionally, CAUTIs harm patient experience ratings, which are available to the public, and may eventually harm the healthcare organization’s reputation. A CAUTI can increase the risk of death, morbidity, extended hospital stays, and general patient discomfort (Rahimi et al., 2019). As a result, nurses are accountable for the care and well-being of patients to some extent. Their actions or lack thereof may play a role in the contraction or prevention of CAUTIs.
The evidence supporting CAUTI prevention and nurse-led urinary catheter (UC) removal protocols must be gathered before it can be summarized and synthesized to represent best practices. As a result, the purpose of this paper is to briefly describe the search strategies used to identify two articles on CAUTI prevention and nurse protocols for the removal of indwelling UCs.
