Opioid Overdose and Impact on Healthcare
Opioid overdose has been a major issue in the past and to this day is one of the leading causes of death. According to Han et al. (2022), between 1999 and 2018 there have been roughly 450,000 deaths related to opioid overdose. The impact of these overdoses on healthcare workers has become increasingly rough. Also, the cost of naloxone and other medications or interventions for opioid overdoses are very high. These resources could be spent on other forms of healthcare expenses. We will discuss further the problem, evidence, and search strategies to obtain information on this topic.
Clinical Question
We will be focusing on opioid use and overdoses and how it affects the healthcare industry.
The burnout of nurses or healthcare workers seeing so many overdoses and deaths related to overdoses along with the cost impact opioid overdoses have on the healthcare industry.
Healthcare systems are spending so much on naloxone or drugs to revers symptoms of overdose, and these resources could be better used on resources such as supplies or research. Opioid overdoses may lead to severe neurological complications or even death. Opioids commonly prescribed for outpatient use were prescribed to 77.93% of fracture patients (Qeadan & Madden, 2021).
